SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

In general, the Symphony Orchestra is for students in grade 9 through college.

Strings, Woodwinds and Brass:

  • One major or minor scale.  Strings 2-3 octaves.  Winds and brass 1-2 octaves.
  • A short solo piece (an etude or excerpt from a concerto or sonata).  Solos should not be music from your school band/orchestral ensemble.
  • The audition will end with a short sight-reading passage provided by the artistic staff.

Percussion:

  • Percussionists should prepare a short excerpt on both snare drum and xylophone/marimba.  Etudes, portions of solo literature or orchestral excerpts are all acceptable.  Percussionists will be asked about their experience with other instruments (timpani, auxiliary percussion) but will not be required to play them at the audition.
  • The audition will end with a short snare drum sight-reading passage provided by the artistic staff.

PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

In general, the Philharmonic Orchestra is for students in grades 7-9.

  • One major scale, 1-2 octaves.
  • A short solo piece (chosen from the solo repertoire, a method book or an etude book for your instrument).  The piece should not be music from your school orchestral ensemble.
  • The audition will end with a short sight-reading passage provided by the artistic staff.

JUNIOR STRING ORCHESTRA

In general, the String Orchestra is for students in grades 4-8. At least one year playing experience is recommended.

  • One major scale, 1-2 octaves.
  • A short solo piece (chosen from the solo repertoire, a method book or an etude book for your instrument).  The piece should not be music from your school orchestral ensemble.
  • The audition will end with a short sight-reading passage provided by the artistic staff.
